In July 2017 the G20 summit was held in the city of Hamburg. Due to public riots the summit had to be protected by 30.000 Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) personnel from all over Germany. Hence, it was one of the largest operations in the history of the Federal police. A great number of the PPDR personnel was temporarily operating in an area covered by two base stations - an extraordinary challenge for the German public safety digital radio. The TETRA-based technology successfully demonstrated its performance capability thanks to the co-operation between forces from other Federal States, the network operator and the Federal Agency for Public Safety Digital Radio (BDBOS) as well as the support from the system technology supplier. A reliable radio communication was ensured throughout the entire duration of the operation which proved how well equipped the German Public Safety Digital Radio is concerning all possible tactical requirements in Germany.
